Six Mongoose schemas, the database shape.
Messages, comments, and job applications are embedded subdocuments, not separate collections. Passwords hash on save with cost 12 and never leave the database (the field is excluded from queries by default). The chat model drops near-duplicate messages at save time and keeps the last-message timestamp fresh for conversation ordering.
What it owns
- User: profile, credentials, GitHub data, skills, projects
- Connection: requester, recipient, pending/accepted/rejected
- Post: content, code snippet, likes, embedded comments
- Chat: participants with embedded messages and delivery status
- Notification: typed references to whatever caused it
- Job: listing with embedded applications and resumes
